The Black Beacon 21 is a wonderful mountain challenge through the spectacular landscapes of the Black Mountains.

Starting in Llangynidir, the route heads north into increasingly remote terrain, climbing steadily onto the ridgelines and open hills that define this beautiful corner of Wales.  Along the way, runners are treated to expansive views, runnable mountain trails and a true sense of adventure far beyond what the distance alone might suggest.

As the race unfolds, the mountains begin to reveal their scale.  Long ridgelines, steep descents and ever-changing views create a route that is both challenging and immensely rewarding.  The highlight comes on the approach to Hay Bluff, where runners are treated to a spectacular panorama across the Welsh borderlands and a first glimpse of the finish waiting far below in Hay-on-Wye.

Sharing the miles and finish line with competitors from the Black Beacon 50 and 100 creates a unique atmosphere, with runners from all distances coming together after their own mountain journeys.

For those looking for a genuine mountain running experience without ultra-mileage, the Black Beacon 21 delivers big scenery, rewarding climbs and an unforgettable finish.

The Black Beacon 21 Mile takes in the final section of the 100 Mile and 50 mile routes.  You will be joining them both and providing them with much needed support (especially the 100 mile runners).

GPS files for the current year are sent out in the pre-race emails to account for any diversions.  The map represents the 2025 route, which can be used for recce runs.  However only the current GPS should be used on the event.
