The Black Beacon 34 is a fast-moving mountain adventure through some varied and spectacular scenery.
Starting amongst the waterfalls of Pontneddfechan and just after the 50 mile runners, the route wastes little time before climbing high into the Bannau Brycheiniog and the peaks of Corn Ddu, Pen Y Fan and Cribyn. Steep ascents, runnable ridgelines and sweeping descents combine to create a course that constantly changes character, with every summit revealing another dramatic stretch of mountain landscape.
Despite the mountainous terrain, the Black Beacon 34 has a wonderfully runnable feel. Long stretches of flowing trail allow runners to find rhythm between the climbs, carrying them across open ridgelines and through vast mountain landscapes towards the finish in Llangynidir.
The atmosphere on the mountain is unlike a standalone race. Throughout the day, runners encounter competitors from the longer Black Beacon distances, sharing trails, checkpoints and the experience of moving through the mountains together.
Combined with the dramatic late-autumn landscapes and ever-changing Welsh mountain weather, the Black Beacon 34 delivers an experience that feels far bigger than its mileage alone suggests.
Course Elevation and Profile
The Black Beacon 50k takes in the first section of the 50 mile route, also the return leg of the 100 mile route. You will be joining them both and providing them with much needed support (especially the 100 mile runners).
GPS files for the current year are sent out in the pre-race emails to account for any diversions. The map represents the 2025 route, which can be used for recce runs. However only the current GPS should be used on the event.
