The Black Beacon 100 is a mountain ultra that tests both body and mind.

Starting in the literary town of Hay-on-Wye, runners head south across the Black Mountains and deep into the heart of the Bannau Brycheiniog, linking summits, climbs and some of the finest mountain trails in Wales.

The first half of the journey draws you deeper into the mountains, ridges roll away towards the horizon, checkpoints become milestones and every summit reveals another waiting in the distance.  The route passes through valleys, crosses wild open moorland before diving into the waterfalls and forests of Waterfall Country and reaching the southern turnaround point at Pontneddfechan.

Then comes the true challenge.  You turn around.

Every mountain you celebrated on the way out now stands between you and the finish line. Every climb you descended must be conquered again. The route is familiar, but the experience is entirely different.

Supported by frequent checkpoints, fully marked trails and the atmosphere created by runners tackling the 21-mile, 34-mile and 50-mile routes alongside you, the Black Beacon 100 delivers a unique mountain ultra experience that is as rewarding as it is demanding.

Course Elevation and Profile

The Black Beacon 100 is an out and back course, with the map illustrating the first half for clarity.  Return leg checkpoints are in the same locations.  We have found that competitors like to have 2 separate GPS files - for psychological reasons!

GPS files for the current year are sent out in the pre-race emails to account for any diversions.  The mapped route is 2025, which can be used for recce runs.  However only the current GPS should be used on the event.
